As we reach the middle of the first trimester, Poe students have been busy learning in the LMC.
Kindergarten
Poe’s youngest students have been reading several stories about starting school and making new friends. One of our favorites was Wemberly Worried, by Kevin Henkes. You can find more book by Kevin Henkes, games to play and interesting information about this author by visiting the website http://www.kevinhenkes.com/young.asp
Kindergarten students also just finished reading Dr. Seuss’s Ten Apples Up On Top.Be sure to stop by the LMC to see the wonderful counting project your student completed using the theme of this book.
First Grade
The First Grade students started off the year by reading books about libraries and librarians. We enjoyed Winston the Book Wolf, by Marni McGee and Library Lion, by Michelle Knuden, illustrated by Kevin Hawkes.First graders will be reading more books on this subject as they collect information to answer the questions “what happens in a library” and “what does a librarian do?” They may be surprised by the some of the information they learn in an upcoming book, My Librarian is a Camel: How Books Are Brought to Children Around the World by Margriet Ruurs. First Graders are also reading and voting on the books nominated for the Monarch Book Award.
Second Grade
Second Graders spent some time learning to identify the different parts of a book. They even learned a song to help them remember some of these parts.Click on the link below to hear Mrs. Mueller’s second grade class sing Hi! Ho! Librario!
Second Graders are also having fun reading and voting on the Monarch Book Award. The Monarch is a reader’s choice specifically for Illinois, students in Kindergarten through third grade. You can find all the books nominated for the Monarch Award at the following link: www.islma.org/pdf/Monarch_2010MasterList.pdf
Third, Fourth and Fifth Grade
Intermediate level students have been learning how to use different online library catalogs to locate books.Students in all three grades are becoming masters using author, title, keyword and call number searches to find just the right books. Third, Fourth and Fifth Graders have recently looked at children’s book reviews written by students across the US on a website called Spaghetti Book Club. You can visit this page at: www.spaghettibookclub.org
In the near future, intermediate students will be writing their own book reviews, which you will be able to see right here on this webpage. In early October, staff from Indian Trails Library visited Third Grade students for a special story and activities. The Indian Trails Library staff will be back soon to visit the fourth and fifth graders too.
